Early in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, you’ll come across a side quest called “In the Footsteps of Gods.”

In this quest, Alexios helps a priestess at the Temple of Zeus retrieve the Spear of Kephalos from Melissani’s Cave. Straightforward enough. Go into a cave. Fight a few enemies. Loot a shiny spear.

But once you return, the game hits you with the real choice.

Do you:

  • Give the spear back for free?
  • Ask for a reward?
  • Or keep it for yourself?

What Happens If You Give the Spear Back for Free?

If you hand it over like a generous demigod, the priestess is grateful. You gain a bit of experience and maintain that wholesome hero vibe.

But financially? You get nothing extra.

Early game in Odyssey can feel slightly poor. Drachmae disappear fast if you’re upgrading gear or experimenting with builds. So while giving it back for free feels morally correct… your wallet might disagree.

What If You Ask for a Reward?

This is the “I’m helpful, but not THAT helpful” option.

The priestess will give you a reward — and honestly, it’s the most balanced choice. You still complete the quest properly, and you walk away with some compensation for your time and effort.

From a practical gameplay perspective, this is the smartest early-game move. You’re a mercenary, after all. This is business.

What If You Keep the Spear?

You can absolutely keep it. And yes, it feels a little chaotic.

Keeping the spear gives you the item, but the priestess won’t be pleased. It’s not a massive story-changing decision, but it sets the tone for how you want to roleplay Alexios.

Are you:

  • A noble misthios?
  • A practical freelancer?
  • Or an opportunistic loot goblin?

No judgment here.

So… What’s the Best Choice?

If you’re playing casually and just want smooth progression: Ask for the reward.

You get experience, money, and no unnecessary awkwardness.

But if you’re roleplaying hard? Choose whatever fits your version of Alexios.

That’s one of the things I love about Assassin’s Creed Odyssey — even small quests feel like personality tests.

If you want to see how my version of Alexios handled this quest, you can watch the full chaos in the video below or catch me live next time on Twitch and judge my decisions in real time.

Because let’s be honest… half the fun of Odyssey is making questionable choices and pretending they were strategic.
