…or at least, in my opinion, they totally are!

Music is freaking important to me and it’s no exception when it comes to video games. If you’re a non-gamer, you probably think of the bleeps and bloops of Super Mario Bros theme song. But nope! I’m not talking about this kind of music although there’s nothing wrong with it. Some of you might enjoy it.

Video game soundtracks have evolved to beautifully composed medleys and lofi beats. Think of the epic orchestra and opera singing playing in the background of Final Fantasy 7 final boss fight…umm the remastered one please, not the 1997’s bleeps and bloops. Anyway, my point is that these soundtracks play an essential role in creating that mood when you’re playing.

But what if we’re not playing the games, would we enjoy the music as they are? Of course! I have a list in Spotify I call Creative Focus which I listen to when I’m drawing, designing, and writing. Most of the music in this list are soundtracks from video games. I don’t listen to music with lyrics when I’m in my creative mode as I don’t want to be distracted.

Here are some of my picks of the most epic-like video game soundtracks that I listen to on a daily basis. While the video games may be different but you’ll see the same few composers I tend to stick to, namely Gareth Croker, Brian Tyler, and Jesper Kyd.

1. Ori and the Blind Forest

I cannot get enough of Ori’s soundtracks! This collection is my top of the list so far as I could put them on repeat. The moment I play it, it evokes a kind of euphoria. I totally improve my productivity 10 times more when I listen to them, I kid you not! So, here’s another one.

2. Ori and the Will of the Wisps

Didn’t I say I can’t get enough of Ori’s soundtrack? Or rather Gareth Coker’s music. This collection is from a recent release of the game in March 2020. I would say the soundtrack team manages to wow me another round.

3. Zanarkand (Final Fantasy X)

The Final Fantasy series has the most amazing and epic soundtrack of all time. Their regular composer of a few notable themes is Japanese video game composer Nobuo Uematsu. This is my favourite of his.

4. ARK Survival Evolved

We’re back to Gareth Coker. Yeah, I know I’m being biased here but I truly like his stuff. Do you play Ark Evolved? It’s not just the soundtracks that will blow your mind, the graphics too!

5. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

The soundtracks in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 are composed by none others than Brian Tyler. The drums and guitars with an orchestra-sounding theme are truly remarkable work. The main theme here also reminded me of the Iron Man 3 theme which is also another masterpiece by Brian Tyler.

6. Fallout 4

This is such a piece of soothing music by Inon Zur that convey the tension in the game. I like the somber feeling it gives me.

7. Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune (Nate’s Theme)

This music, for some reasons, evokes that feeling of patriotism. It’s suitable to be a war theme song. It’s very euphoric like and I totally love it!

8. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

Another wonderful piece by Brian Tyler.

9. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (Geralt of Rivia Main Theme)

How can I ever not include The Witcher? I like most of the music in this soundtrack with this being my favourite. With great scores like this, it just make the game more enjoyable than it already is.
