Different Mentors for Different Stages in Life

In this post, I’m going to share my own experience as a mentee in the whole mentoring process.

When I was in university, I had a mentor, M, who gave me great guidance and support in building up my self esteem and motivation. After graduation, I went on to work with him and I learned even more. But as I evolved as a person, I wanted new experiences and challenges. I left with a promise I would be back.

I was on my own for a year until I found another mentor, C, who guided me in building up my confidence and leadership skills. We started off as business partners and we became good friends. This learning phase became the most crucial in my life because C truly unleashed my true potential and until today, whenever I achieve successes along my personal and business life, I always think of him.

Again, I evolved as a person and a leader, so I moved on to take on more challenges. It’s like playing video games, really. If it’s too easy, it gets boring. Besides, life never gets easier, you just get stronger.

Then, I met D and he nicknamed himself as “tor-mentor”. I’ve known him for quite some time. He’s knowledgeable in a lot of things. His mentoring style, unlike M and C, can be very abrasive. As difficult as it was for me working with him, I really needed someone like D to “smack” a dose of reality in me because I was too soft and allowed people to take advantage of me.

So, you see, in different stages of our lives, we do need different mentors unless of course, your mentor can evolve the way he/ she mentors you. I did go back to M as promised but I didn’t find anything new to learn anymore. His mentoring method remains consistent. As a person with a zest for learning and growing, I find no new challenges, so I got bored and started to get frustrated.

So, now my former mentors are people I no longer look for when I need advice but they’re more like friends I cherish and they have my gratitude. Moving on, I would probably need a business coach to help me take my business to the next level!

If you’re interested to learn more about coaching and mentoring whether it’s for your own personal growth or to be a coach/ mentor to others, you can find out more from these books I’ve read.
